Interlaced or combined into one final file and then printed on a plastic lens a lenticular is a series of images. Refracting light in such a way as to create depth or motion effects when the lenticular is turned, the lens has tiny tactile ridges.

Difference between a lenticular and hologram

In the medium of print advertising, Lenticular Sticker is currently much more common. But when searching for a lenticular printer the more familiar term hologram is used by many customers. This is, unfortunately, a misnomer.

A hologram is created with laser light reflected onto an emulsion and typically monochromatic. To achieve the ideal effect the finished product needs to be properly lit.

On the other hand, in a range of effects from animations to morphs to 3D Depth Lenticular printing, reproduces photographic, full color -quality images.

Cost of lenticular printing

The prices of lenticulars have got down tremendously with new advances in technology. Minimum quantity orders of 2500 pieces starting at around $1-$5 each are offered by most manufacturers, until recently. Over the past decade, minimum pricing and quantities have dropped significantly.

In addition, on larger quantity orders of lenticular business cards and Lenticular Book Cover, pricing has dropped to as low as .18 each.

Other Advances

Years ago, the clarity was substandard and lenticulars were on much thicker lenses. As most likely it wouldn’t reproduce accurately, printers advised against using much text on the lenticular side. If required, contact info was generally printed on the reverse side.

The clarity of lenticular printing with new technological advances has improved greatly today. Image sequences are clearer and Text reproduces more accurately. In addition, today’s lenses are not so awkward or bulky and thinner.

Time is taken to produce lenticulars

To produce offset, professionally printed lenticulars most manufacturers advertise a minimum of 3 weeks. The interlacing and set-up are labor-intensive & time-consuming and typically before your lenticulars can be produced a full gang run has to be filled.
